Carpet Cleaning in Estacada, OR: Heavy Rain, Wood Heat, and Wildfire Smoke

Estacada receives about 58 inches of precipitation a year at the NOAA cooperative station near town, and in September 2020 the entire city was ordered to evacuate ahead of the Riverside Fire. Wet winters, wood heat in the surrounding ZIP code, and a housing stock in which 58 percent of homes date to 2000 or later set the terms for floor care here.

A town that began as a dam camp

Estacada started in 1903 as a camp for workers building a power dam on the Clackamas River, meant to supply electricity to Portland, and it incorporated in 1905. The census counted 2,371 residents in 2000, 2,695 in 2010, and 4,356 in 2020, and the Census Bureau's 2023 estimate is 5,421. The origin of the name is disputed. One theory derives it from a civic leader's daughters, Esther and Katie, and Wikipedia notes no evidence that they existed. Another says George Kelly took the name at random from a map of the Llano Estacado in Texas.

The newest housing in the area

The American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) puts the median year Estacada homes were built at 2005. Of 1,979 housing units, 58.3 percent, about 1,150 homes, date to 2000 or later, and 16.9 percent, about 335 homes, were built in the 2020s, the highest share of any area we serve. Another 24.7 percent were built in the 2010s. Only 27 percent predate 1980.

Eighty-nine percent of occupied homes heat mainly with electricity, against 53.5 percent for Oregon, and only 2.1 percent use utility gas. Mobile homes make up 8.6 percent of units in the city and 15.5 percent in ZIP code 97023, which is home to 12,111 residents.

Fifty-eight inches of rain, concentrated in winter

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals record 57.8 inches of precipitation a year at the cooperative station 2 miles southeast of Estacada, 56 percent more than the 36.9 inches at Portland International Airport. Forty-two percent of it, 24.0 inches, arrives from November through January, and December averages 8.4 inches. July and August together average 1.4. The station records 40 days a year with a low at or below 32 degrees, compared with 30 at the Oregon City station, and 1.1 inches of snow.

In December a closed house has few ways to shed added moisture. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent, and a closed house on a rainy day is working against that. A low-moisture method puts less water into the carpet, and floors dry in about an hour in typical conditions. See how drying works.

The Riverside Fire and the smell in soft surfaces

The Riverside Fire started on September 8, 2020, and burned 138,054 acres in Clackamas County and destroyed 139 structures, according to Wikipedia's table of the 2020 Oregon fires. KOIN's coverage of September 9 and 10 reported that the entire city of Estacada was ordered to evacuate around 1:30 p.m. On September 14 the city was still under a Level 3 "Go Now" order, with the fire listed at 134,575 acres and 0 percent contained.

A house that sits closed through a smoke event collects odor in carpet, upholstery, and mattresses, and we clean and deodorize those surfaces: carpet, upholstery, and mattresses. Structural smoke and fire damage is a restoration job that falls outside carpet cleaning, and we will say so if a house needs it.

Wood heat

In ZIP code 97023, 19.1 percent of homes heat mainly with wood, nearly five times the Clackamas County rate of 3.9 percent. Inside the city limits the figure is 6.7 percent. The ash and soot a stove leaves on the carpet around it are covered on our Boring page.

How a cleaning is planned for Estacada homes

With 58 percent of Estacada homes built since 2000 and winter precipitation near eight inches a month, a written scope notes the carpet's age, whether the house has been closed up for the season, and where soft furniture sits, so the quote covers every surface that holds odor. Schedule and airflow are planned for a damp month.

Before you request a quote: If a house was closed up through smoke, list every soft surface that smells: carpet, sofa, mattress, curtains. The odor usually sits in several places, and a quote can cover them together.

Questions from Estacada households

Can you remove wildfire smoke odor from carpet and furniture?

We clean and deodorize carpet, upholstery, and mattresses with eco-friendly solutions, and results depend on how long and how heavily the house was exposed. Structural smoke damage from a fire in the building is a restoration job, and we will say so if that is what a house needs.

Should I wait for a dry spell to schedule cleaning?

The Estacada station averages 8.4 inches of precipitation in December and 1.4 in July and August together. Because our method uses far less water and floors are typically dry in about an hour, winter cleaning is practical, and humidity and carpet thickness still affect the exact time.

Do you serve homes outside Estacada city limits?

Yes. ZIP code 97023 has about 12,100 residents, while the city counts about 5,200. We serve the surrounding country, and our service areas page lists nearby communities.

Is wood-stove ash different from wildfire ash?

Both are fine, dry particles that should be vacuumed before cleaning, and heavy soot needs a closer look. Tell us the source when you request a quote and send a photo.
