Homes from the 1960s and 1970s
The American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) puts the median year built for the 3,259 homes in ZIP code 97009 at 1977. Some 57 percent date to before 1980, and 30 percent, about 960 homes, were built in the 1970s alone. Only 15 percent date to 2000 or later. Twelve percent of households rent, and 80 percent of homes are detached houses.
A house that old has usually had several owners and more than one flooring project. Carpet in the bedrooms, vinyl in the kitchen, and hardwood in the living room is a common mix, and each material is cleaned differently. A quote for a house like that lists each floor type by room, with hardwood and vinyl treated as separate jobs from carpet.

Wood heat and the ash it leaves
In ZIP code 97009, 12.0 percent of homes heat mainly with wood. That is two and a half times the Oregon rate of 4.8 percent and three times the Clackamas County rate of 3.9 percent. Within the small Census place the figure is 6.5 percent.
A wood stove puts fine ash and soot into the room every time the door opens, and most of it settles on the hearth rug and the carpet near the stove. Ash and soot should be vacuumed rather than wiped, because rubbing grinds the particles into the pile and smears the oily soot. A cleaning follows a thorough vacuuming of those strips, and tell us where the stove sits so we can look at that carpet first.
Manufactured homes and the subfloor
Mobile and manufactured homes make up 16.5 percent of homes in the Boring ZIP code, against 7.1 percent across Oregon. Some are carpeted over particleboard or plywood decking that swells when soaked repeatedly. Less water is the safer choice there, and the low-moisture method used for carpet cleaning puts far less water into the floor than a method that floods the carpet. When you request a quote, tell us the type of home and the floor under the carpet if you know it.
Fifty percent more rain than the airport
NOAA has no 1991 to 2020 normals station inside Boring, and the nearest volunteer station, 0.6 miles west-southwest at about 520 feet, records 55.3 inches of precipitation a year. Portland International Airport records 36.9, so Boring receives about 50 percent more. At the Boring station 42 percent of the year's precipitation falls from November through January, and December averages 8.2 inches. July and August together average 1.4.
On lots with a yard, a dog, and a gravel drive, that is a long season of wet paws. A muddy dog on carpet is a pet stain and odor job as much as a soil job, because dried mud holds the smell of whatever the dog rolled in.

A name from a farmer and a pairing with Dull
Boring is named for William Harrison Boring, an Illinois native and Union veteran of the Siege of Vicksburg who began farming in the area in 1874 and donated land for the community's first schoolhouse. His half-brother Joseph had settled nearby in 1856. The Boring Lava Field, a group of about 80 extinct lava vents, lies just north of town.
In June 2012 Boring accepted a proposal from Dull, Scotland, to pair the two communities to promote tourism, and Bland Shire in New South Wales joined in 2013. Sister Cities International does not recognize the arrangement.
How a cleaning is planned for Boring homes
Fifty-seven percent of homes in the Boring ZIP code were built before 1980, so a written scope names each room's floor type before pricing, and it asks where the wood stove is and what the carpet sits on. Ash is vacuumed first, and spots near the stove are noted separately from general soil.
Before you request a quote: Photograph the carpet and hearth rug nearest the stove before you request a quote. Tell us what sits under the carpet if you know it: concrete, plywood, or a manufactured-home subfloor.

Questions from Boring households
Can you clean ash and soot from carpet near a wood stove?
We clean the carpet and rugs around a stove, and the first step is a thorough vacuuming of the ash. Light soot often lifts. Heavy soot from a stove malfunction or a chimney fire is a restoration job, and we will tell you if the carpet needs that instead.
Is low-moisture cleaning suitable for a manufactured home?
Less water is gentler on any subfloor that is not concrete, and the VLM method puts far less water into the carpet than a flooding method. Tell us the age and construction of the home when you request a quote, and we will say what we recommend before we start.
Is Boring, Oregon named after a person?
Yes. It is named for William Harrison Boring, a farmer and Union veteran who began farming there in 1874. In 2012 and 2013 the town was paired with Dull, Scotland, and Bland, Australia, to promote tourism, though Sister Cities International does not recognize the arrangement.
Do you serve properties outside the village center?
Yes. ZIP code 97009 has 8,336 residents, and the Census place at its center counts 1,869. We serve the surrounding farms and subdivisions and nearby communities listed on our service areas page.
