A city that was dissolved, and the court case that settled it

Damascus began as a community in 1867, when a post office opened, and the post office closed in 1904. Residents incorporated the city in 2004 to gain local control over land-use decisions, and voters approved a charter on September 21, 2005, with 88 percent in favor. On May 17, 2016, voters approved disincorporation, and the city ostensibly ceased to exist on July 18, 2016.

The story continued in court. In May 2019 the Oregon Court of Appeals nullified the vote because turnout had not reached the state's 50 percent threshold. The Legislature passed Senate Bill 226 in 2019 to ratify the 2016 result, and on September 3, 2020, the Oregon Supreme Court reinstated the disincorporation. Damascus is now unincorporated territory in Clackamas County and a census-designated place. The census counted 9,022 residents in 2000, 10,539 in 2010, and 11,050 in 2020.

The 1970s decade

The American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) counts 3,886 housing units in the Damascus census-designated place, with a median year built of 1978. Some 35.9 percent, about 1,395 homes, were built in the 1970s, more than in any other decade. Altogether 57 percent predate 1980, and 6.6 percent, about 255 homes, predate 1940. Only 22 percent date to 2000 or later.

Houses that old have usually been remodeled one room at a time, which leaves a mix of carpet, vinyl, and wood from room to room. A quote that lists each floor by room keeps the job clear. Ask about hardwood floor cleaning if wood floors are part of the picture.

Space between the house and the road

The former city covers 16.14 square miles. With 3,886 housing units across about 16 square miles of land, Damascus has roughly 240 homes per square mile. Happy Valley, to the west, has 9,450 homes in 11.9 square miles, about 790 per square mile. Lower density tends to mean longer driveways and more yard between the car and the front door, and the soil that crosses that distance arrives at the entry. An entry rug is the first place it shows.

Owners with children at home

Ninety-five percent of Damascus homes are detached houses and 90.5 percent of households own their home, compared with 62.7 percent and 63.3 percent for Oregon. Children live in 34.2 percent of households in the census-designated place and 38.1 percent in ZIP code 97089, which has 15,101 residents. When the household that owns the house is also the household that pays for cleaning, the scope usually covers a chosen set of rooms and the furniture in them, so upholstery cleaning is often part of the same visit.

Between two rain gauges

NOAA has no 1991 to 2020 normals station in Damascus. The volunteer station at Happy Valley, to the west at about 590 feet, records 49.4 inches of precipitation a year, and the one at Boring, to the east at about 520 feet, records 55.3 inches. Damascus lies between them, so its annual total is likely to fall between the two. Both stations record about 42 to 44 percent of the year's precipitation from November through January.

How a cleaning is planned for Damascus homes

Fifty-seven percent of Damascus homes were built before 1980 and 90 percent of households own their home, so a written scope is itemized by room and floor type for a single owner, with carpet, vinyl, and wood listed separately and furniture noted where it is included.

Before you request a quote: Send a photo of the entry, the main carpeted rooms, and any wood or vinyl floors. A house remodeled over fifty years often has four or five different floors, and the photos tell us which.

Questions from Damascus households

Is Damascus, Oregon a city?

No. Voters approved dissolving the city on May 17, 2016, and after court challenges the Oregon Supreme Court reinstated that vote on September 3, 2020. It is now unincorporated territory in Clackamas County and a census-designated place with 11,437 residents.

Do you serve homes outside the old city limits?

Yes. ZIP code 97089 has about 15,100 residents, and the census-designated place has 11,437. We serve both, and nearby communities are listed on our service areas page.

How should I describe floors in a house remodeled in pieces?

List each room with its floor type and condition, and email a photo of each. Carpet, vinyl, and hardwood are cleaned differently, and a house from the 1970s often has all three.

Can you clean upholstery during the same visit?

Yes. We clean sofas, chairs, and sectionals. Tell us what furniture you want cleaned when you request a quote, and note the care tag if you can find it.
